However, market share was increasingly growing by several large commercial services, including AOL Personals, Yahoo! Personals, Match.com, and eHarmony. Most recently, it has become common for online dating websites to provide webcam chats between members. In addition, as the online dating population becomes larger, sites with specific demographics are becoming more popular as a way to narrow the pool of potential matches.

Match.com reportedly has more than 20 million members, made up of a 49/51 male/female ratio, and Web sites serving 25 countries in more than 8 different languages. Its headquarters are in Dallas, Texas and the company also has offices in West Hollywood, Tokyo, Rio, and Beijing. Match.com is owned by IAC/InterActiveCorp and employs more than 340 people worldwide. Match.com has nearly $342.598 million in revenue and 1.3 million paying subscribers.

OkCupid supports various modes of communication, including personal blogs, public forums, instant messages, emails, and “winks.” OkCupid was listed in TIME’s 2007 Top 10 dating sites. The site is a subsidiary of Match.com which is a member of the IAC family of brands.

OkCupid facilitates both heterosexual and same-sex relationships. OkCupid claims 3.5 million active users as of September 2010. According to Compete.com, OkCupid attracted 1.3 million unique visitors in February 2011.

Date.com (Now matchmaker.com) is an online dating community dedicated to helping over 8 million members develop the right relationship for them since 1997. Members can browse the site, post a profile, and include a photograph for free! According to Compete.com’s site traffic tracking, Plentyoffish attracted  5.3 million visitors in February 2011.

TRUE.com  was founded in 2003 by entrepreneur Herb Vest. Its original name was TrueBeginnings.com, but the company felt that this name was too limiting, as company leadership wanted to expand the company into other markets one day. In 2004 the domain name True.com was purchased and the company changed its name. True is known for its strict policies regarding background checks, which are used to ensure that members are not felons or married. Vest reports 16 million total members, as of May 2007 but it is unclear how many of them are actual paying or active members. Of that, an independent analysis shows an estimated 3.8 million unique visits to the site per month.
