My Daily Routine: Current vs. Expectation

My current routine

…which I have being doing for 2 years 9 months ever since I started working as a Software Engineer-

4.30 AM: Wake Up

4.30 – 6.00 : Internet browsing + running online errands

6.00 – 6.30 : Get ready for work

6.30 : Leave home.

6.30 – 6.42: Short distance walk + waiting for bus

6.42 – 7.16: Bus ride + waiting for company shuttle

8.40 – Reach my workstation

8.40 – 8.45 – Check mails

8.45 – 9.10 – Breakfast with a friend from work

9.15 – 9.30 – Coffee/Tea with another friend from work

9.30 – 11.30 – Work. Involves anything in the development cycle

11.30 – 11.40 : Get Green Tea and browse LinkedIn. A quite time for myself

11.40 AM – 1.00 PM: Work

1.00 – 1.30 : Have lunch with friends in office cafeteria.

1.30 – 2.15 : Get Coffee/Tea. Sit down for a chat and share work related stories and discuss about anything under the sun. I sometimes fell this is unnecessary and non productive. But I think it’s necessary to have a social life and not just live within my cocoon.

2.15 – 4.00 : Work

4.00 – 4.15 : Coffee/Tea with a colleague

4.15 – 5.00 : Work

5.15 – 6.35 : Long commute in Bangalore’s traffic

6.35 – 7.30 : Wait for bus – Bus ride – Walk towards home

7.30 – 8.00 : Dinner

8.00 – 8.30 : Internet

8.30 PM : Retire to bed

  • Time spent working – 5 Hours 55 minutes
  • Time spent commuting  – 46 minutes + 1 hour  24 minutes + 2 hours 15 minutes = 4 hours 25 minutes!!
  • Time spent reading (during commute) – 1 hour 20 minutes on average. I’m a slow reader though.
  • Total productive hours apart from work during weekdays – 0

As you can see, time spent working on personal interests is nill during weekdays. I wish I could cut down on mindlessly browsing Reddit and other sites and instead work on things which will help me grow personally and professionally.

My Fantasy Routine which I would strictly follow –

4.30 AM: Wake up without needing alarms

4.30 – 6.00 : Internet business + online errands

6.00 – 6.15 : Freshen up.

6.15 – 6.20 : Head to gym

6.20 – 7.15 : Working out

7.15 – 7.30 : Shower

7.30 – 7.45 : Meditate

7.45 – 8.30 : Learn and develop a new skill which wold help me in my career

8.30 : Get ready for work

8.45 : Start commute for work

9.00 : Reach workstation

9.00 AM- 5.00 PM : Time in office

5.00 PM : Start commute towards home

5.15 PM : Reach home

5.15 – 5.20 : Freshen up

5.20 – 5.40 : Unwind. Browse internet, chat up with friends

5.40 – 6.40 : Read useful books in a quite room

6.40 – 7.30 : Internet business

7.30 – 8.00 : Dinner

8.00 : 8.30 : Plan next day’s activities and get things prepped

8.30 : Retire to bed

Total productive hours apart from work during weekdays- 1 hour 30 minutes + 45 minutes + 50 minutes = 3 hours 5 minutes.

Obviously, this can be achieved in two ways –

  • Move closer to work
  • Get a job closer to home

The second option is much more desirable due to the short distance from my current home to my Dad’s shop.

Closest IT hub – Manyata Tech Park (Focusing on my 15 minute work commute goal).

List of desirable companies in Manyata –

  1. Philips
  2. ANZ Bank
  3. Intel
  4. Microsoft

(Will keep adding more)

This routine will demand some extra monetary investment which I would fulfill by taking a new higher paying job closer to home.  It would definitely help me in quenching my entrepreneurial drive.
