Nokia Lumia 950 Prototype Appears

This weeks sees the release of the Nokia Lumia 520 and Lumia 720, but it also has shown us what could be the next top of the line Lumia: the Nokia Lumia 950. The folks over at WPCentral have posted pictures of the purported handset, which looks like it could be the ultimate PureView phone we’ve been waiting for.

Nokia Lumia 950

The first thing you’ll notice about the phone is that it’s much boxier than we’ve seen from Lumia in the past. We’ve heard that Nokia were updating their design language to better differentiate themselves and stay modern, and it looks like this may be one avenue they’re exploring.

The screen has a resolution of 1280 x 768 (the current maximum supported on Windows Phone 8) and will reportedly be a Super AMOLED display based on the PureMotion HD panel inside the current top dog Lumia 920. Beneath the screen there’s an odd squarish Windows button, flanked with the standard search and buttons to the right and left, respectively.

Inside the phone, I expect we’ll see a Snapdragon S4 Pro or Snapdragon 600 processor, earlier versions of which have been used by Nokia in the past. The phone is reported to have 2 GB of RAM, which would make it the first Windows Phone handset to hit that particular barrier.

The camera is the real interesting part of this phone, though. It’s reportedly somewhere between the optical-image-stabilisation of the Lumia 920 and the high megapixel sensor of the 808 PureView. While it’s suggested that we’ll see an eventual megapixel count somewhere below the 808’s lofty 41 megapixels, going above 13 megapixels should allow for some of the same oversampling and lossless zoom that worked well in the 808. The optical image stabilisation should offer improved low-light and video performance, too, making the Lumia 950 a best-of-both-worlds solution for mobile photography.

We’re likely to see a lot more of the Lumia 950 before launch if this is Nokia’s next big flagship – expect more images, specifications and Nokia accessories
